Will UFC on Fuel TV 9 have a main event of Ross Pearson vs. Ryan Couture? Good lord, that sounds even worse as I type this. But it seems there’s a very good chance that the schedule headliner could be officially scrapped.
Alexander Gustafsson suffered a facial cut Sunday that supposedly is bad enough to knock him out of his fight with Gegard Mousasi this weekend. That would be quite a blow for this event, considering Gustafsson’s role as the huge fan favorite in his home country of Sweden.
People “in the know” immediately came out and said that the cut would almost certainly force the commission to eliminate Gustafsson from competition. There seems to be no hope at all throughout the day yesterday. But, ever the optimist, Dana White told everyone to tap the brakes. He says the fight is still on—at least for now.
The fact that this event is on Fuel suggests that the fight card is much thinner than a PPV or even a FX show—and that couldn’t be truer in this instance. Pearson/Couture is set as the co-main event with mid-tier heavyweights Matt Mitrione and Phil DeFries being next. That’s not going to play well to the Swedish crowd, not to mention the at-home viewers.
Let’s stay tuned to see if White can polish this turd as the day and week progresses.
